MODULAR SEATING

Lola Lu

Personally designed and hand-crafted, Lola Lu is a low cost, space saving, modular setting piece.

THE DESIGN

The overall design consists of two basic designs: 3 sections with a single back and 2 corner sections.

Each piece can work independently or can be combined and arranged in a number of different configurations, held together with custom clamps that attached under each sections to lock the two sidewalls together.

The key feature of Lola Lu is the integration of full-length pull-out drawers for storage, made possible by the use of webbing rather than springs.

CONSTRUCTION

Cushions built from scratch: this project really started with me wanting to learn how to sew; I figured seat cushions would allow me to learn the basics. Overall, they consist of foam wrapped in dacron, covered in a liner, and toped with removable covers.

Hand built frames: I initially designed everything in CAD. Taking into account grain direction, I was able to optimize the use of 4 sheets of plywood with nearly zero waste.
