What you classify as art is an open ended discussion though. That out of the way, Oakland puts on an art fair the first Friday of every month. Found out about this event through a friend who also highly recommended a sweet bar over on that side of the bay that makes freshly squeezed greyhounds, Cafe Van Kleef. Not knowing what I was getting into, this is Oakland mind you, the art fair was more of a standard street festival than an art show. There were a few people selling jewelry, but I believe there were more food vendors than art stands. Food is big here, as it should be anywhere. I avoided the food but I did not avoid the red solo cup full of beer at a dive, video game bar. Also had the pleasure of making this first time to Oakland trip a true Oakland experience full of low riders. While at the park on Sunday, they made another appearance, where I learned you eat them whole (and beware, most don't have seeds but you may come across one that is full of them). So, trying new things, I stopped by the store and bought a handle of them, afraid I may not like. Washed them up and then tried them! Wow they are sour little guys. Good but they will wake up your taste buds. Quickly realized that, while they are grape size, you can only eat about 3-4 in on sitting. This time back then, I was running around making sh*t happen on my senior project. Having started my project over in mid/late March, and a deadline due mid April, I had 4 weeks to come up with a new problem, do research, ideate, narrow, refine, build a prototype and execute a full display and presentation. It was a lot of work. Well, one of the guys I went to school with, who went through senior project time with me, is out here in SF going to school. We weren't that close in school. We had all our ID classes together yes, but focusing on your projects and the fact I came into that class junior year not knowing anyone, we just never interacted much. But being alone out here and him going to school near by, why not meet up! Had a great time too... like a 3 am late night talking, great time. Funny how much loneliness forces you to take steps you never thought of or thought you would do. In the end, every "risky" step has ended so great. Maybe it is because they have never seemed very clean or the long line to a dark truck, serving a menu you can't see intimidates me. But food trucks are all the rave, and in SF, I ave heard they are the best. So found this cool event, taking place every Friday on the north side of the city called "Off the Grid" where food trucks get together for a few hours, a few other restraints set up some booths and people come eat whatever their hearts desire. From tacos and sandwiches to creme brûlée, lobster rolls and ethnic food that I have no idea what it was but man did it smell good. Giving into my craving for a buffallo chicken sandwich, I got a korean style spice breaded chicken sandwich with non traditional curly friends. The sauce was soon good. I also had to create myself to a personal size caramel creme brûlée. If you are ever in the area on a Friday night, definitely if you are with a ground of friends, you should stop by and grab a drink and order one item from ever truck to share. Why? It just doesn't really exist. So to continue my exposure to new foods (like kumquats) I now know there is a thing called Shabu Shabu. What is Shabu Shabu?! It is where you cook your food in boiling pot of water. Why would you want to go to a restaurant and cook your own food? I don't know. I gladly went with a large group of people who really enjoy this activity. I will admit the company of new friends and the flavor of the food was overwhelmingly amazing, but it did look like a lot of work. Also, Sara next to a boiling pot of hot water on a burner = glad no one (myself included) ended up with 3rd degree burns. While I did love the food, this is definitely a menu item to order with friends who like to cook, otherwise you might as well cook at home. I came across Dirty Water back in September when I visited SF. It was a totally random event that led me to it. I saw The Market sign, which is in the same building, to find something to eat. Not really seeing anything, I made my way through the place and out the back exit, where lo and behold, there was a cool rustic bar. I stopped in, having time to kill, and replaced food with a liquid diet. They had Moscow Mules on their happy hour, so I ordered one. Delivered in a copper mug (like they should be) it was one of the best Moscow Mules I have had thank to the local SF ginger beer and ginger vodka they use. Fast forward 7 months later, here I am living in SF on the corner of 9th and Market, one block East of The Market and Dirty Water. Originally, I was under the impression as I left Dirty Water that it was a hotel bar. The building itself seemed a little strange, with a bad layout and front desk with a long line of people with bags. I thought they were "checking in" to their rooms. Well the building is not a hotel, it is actually the headquarters of Twitter. Now if I was able to read the bright, blue, giant sign out side that is above The Market sign, I would have known this back in September. But... I didn't pay attention to that. Anyways, I have lived next to the Twitter building and the infamous Dirty Water bar for over a month and haven't been there at all! So time to change that and treat myself to a great happy hour Moscow Mule located at one of the hottest companies and best known building in the city. Located between the Richmond and Sunset districts, it goes from Haight-Ashbury to the Pacific Ocean. It is a great asset to the city, but surrounded by neighborhoods, I feel it sometimes is forgotten. The second Tuesday of each month however, the Botanical Grandees has free admission, an incentive to visit. I can only remember every going the the Botanical Gardens in Milwaukee and that was a few years ago. Excepting an indoor setting, similar to the MKE Domes, I was taken back that this garden is open and sprawling with all types of beautiful plants. Their scale and lush foliage makes you forget you are in the city rather than a tropical oasis. But the Botanical Garden is only one of the many attractions in the park. You can also find two Dutch windmills, various sport fields, play grounds, an indoor carousel, the Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, museums and more. Since the Oscar de la Renta was going on at the de Young Museum, my friend Yvonne and I also wondered over there to take a look. First off, I have to give the landscape and building a big shout out, very well done. It is worth going to this plaza to walk around at the very least. The de la Renta gallery however was equally exquisite. Beautiful, hand crafted dresses that capture the culture and time so perfectly, specially designed for one person for one event, makes this pieces of fashion art. Too iconic that no one dears to wear twice. I would gladly take one of each please! All in all, this day of culture and exploring gave not only great perspective to new things, but also gave a new perspective to the city (climb the tower at the de Young Museum and you will know what I'm talking about). I did spring board diving back in middle school/freshman year of high school and that was it. (As a side note, I haven't been on a diving board since). In high school, I did have a few friends on the Indianapolis Ice Hockey team and enjoyed watch them play. So if I have to watch sports, I only watch diving, hockey and rugby (be honest, rugby is a tough sport and they are always moving, how can you not look away from the screen if its on?). Yvonne is a big sports fan though, and it was a special basketball day. Kobe Bryant from the LA Lakers was playing his last game. So Yvoone and I went out to find a sports bar to watch the game. Note to self, SF doesn't have a ton of sports bars around 9th and Market... Polk Street however has options. So in we went. The first place was "too MKE like" for her, and the second place was packed so into Blur we went. Got seats at the bar right away and thanks to their friendly bar tenders, was severed a cold beer immediately. The game started and people were cheering. A few minutes in, I opened my mouth, "which on is Lebron"? Oh the look I got. *Crying laughing* This isn't the Lakers game! It was the Golden State Warriors! Never heard of them but you would think I committed a murder in that building with all the looks I got. Helpful hit if you are ever in SF, the Warriors are a big deal here. Also, it just so happened to be their biggest game every, the game to break the Chicago Bulls record for the most wins in the season. I remember growing up the Bulls were the team to watch, they were on top of the world. Having set the record 20 years ago, the timing puts me at 6 years old and I recall it being the biggest year in basketball I can remember. Aside from originally not knowing who was playing, the game was an exciting close match. In the end, I can say I saw history. The Warriors won! 73 winning games! The night ended a little early, but walked home with a few friends. Let Yvonne into my apt and came back down with the two beers and juice I had in my fridge. Sitting in my lobby, we opened the bottles and drank. First time I really used that lobby, and probably the last. Zeitgeist - San Francisco, CA April 14, 2016 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/52ed1fe9e4b03702763362ed/1462331133511-JRFE6SPKREQRL5EXELZ5/IMG_3432.JPG Free Time - Napa If you are a white wine (mostly chardonnay) drinker, like myself, there are only a handful of "wine country" areas worth going to. Napa makes that list. Not, nowhere in the middle of the US is worth going to or drinking wine from - the wine in the midwest is some of the worst wine you will ever drink. But if you are in northern California, you need to go to Napa. So off to Napa I went! The actual drive from SF to Napa isn't bad at all. Go over the Bay Bridge to Oakland and up you go. The problem though is having a car. If you live live downtown and work downtown, the only reason you would ever own a car is to get out of town on the weekends. But most of you in the city down't own cars, so your options getting to Napa are: take a tour bus, get a Zip Car, or rent a car. I don't have a Zip Car membership, and Yvonne didn't want to do a tour bus, so we rented a car. I have never rented a car before. I also have never used Priceline or Expedia. I also never realize how much a car rental could be! Anyways, we found an alright deal via Budget at the Oakland Airport. To get there, we took the BART. The line at Budget was over an hour wait. We didn't exactly plan on it taking that long. Why car rentals haven't streamlined this process or have anyones car they reserved earlier in the week is beyond me. It shouldn't be that complicated and messed up of a system but in the year 2016, it worst than my last trip to the DMV (which by the way I was able to park, get a new picture, fill out the paper work, pay and was back in my car in under 5 minutes). Once we got the car, the trip north was easy. Downtown Napa is a cute little city. Note, it is small but it does have some great restaurants. We had lunch out on an amazing patio at Angele, and walked along what one may call a creek but it was more or less a dried up river bed. After going out for wine, we came back to a this really cool place Bounty Hunter Wine Bar & Smokin' BBQ. For those who know me, I hate BBQ but for the second time in California, I tried it and freaked LOVED IT! It was so good and they had a really good 2-for-1 wine special! What more would you ask for?! The wine country part of the trip was as perfect. Sunny, warm day. Tight on time as a result of how long the car rental took along with the great relaxing lunch, we only stopped at 2 wineries, but both were so perfect I wouldn't have wanted to ruin the trip by stopping at a third that wasn't up to par. Our first stop was Domaine Carneros, a gorgeous building, with landscaping that makes you think you are in southern France. A glass of their sparking wine out on the patio, and you are bound to forget all your troubles! The second stop was at Artesa, a modern new age building built into a mountain. This is a place I would come every day and spend the entire day on their patio drinking wine. On top of the hill, the views of the countryside, roads and a other vineyards (including Domaine Carneros), gave not only a feel of isolation but also provided some entertainment of traffic. Like all good things, our trip had to come to an end. Since I was the passenger on the way up, I took the wheel driving back down to Oakland. Since it was nearly 10:30 by the time we got back, we expected the drop off to be quick. It wasn't though. Wanting to split the bill was the least of the problems when standing in line for 1.5 hours and getting charged almost $400.00 for the one day rental. We had a car though and the front desk guy said to call back tomorrow to get a full refund of the crazy price, as the outrageous price was a result of returning the car within 24 hours. Other people in line however had bigger issues as there were NO cars, even for those that had scheduled reservations weeks in advance. We got out though and made the last BART train back to the city, arriving home at 1:30 am. I hope the next time I'm in Napa is just as great as my first! Hopefully though the next time I rent a car, I don't have as many problems as I did this time! Having living in MKE for almost 7 years, I never once took a boat down the river or out on the lake. I deeply regret not doing a boat ride in MKE so I am making sure I check it off in SF! While the ferry isn't even close to spending the entire day on a sailboat in the Bay, at least I don't have to worry about the boat tipping over! Another thing I didn't exactly expect was while I was dining of 90 degree weather on the ground, the temperature out of the high speed ferry dropped what felt like almost 20 degrees by the time it got in the middle of the Bay! You can't beat the views from anywhere else though of the city, Golden Gate Bridge or Alcatraz. Now I just need to find someone who owns a boat to take me out there all day, I'll make sure to bring more layers on that trip! That said, while SF is full of people from all over the world and from so many different backgrounds, you typically only find Asian heritage activities, food or goods. With a strong Japanese presents, their neighborhood is one of the nicest in the city. And with their rich pride in heritage, the Cherry Blossom Fest is a welcoming view into a culture of many facets. And the funny part is, I don't think there is one Cherry Blossom Tree in the entire 7x7 city! But that is alright, because this two week activity is more about bring people together than the tress. I went last week to the kickoff of the festivity, but I didn't expect to come across their parade not he way to grab a book of post cards by the Golden Gate Bridge. Running into events like this is why you should always walk in SF though! With people lining the street, it is marveling to see the costumes, listen to the music and experience the beauty of dance. You never know what you will come across in SF and if you get out, odds are you will come across something as spectaculare as this. The ferry building at the end of Market Street and on Embarcadero, has a bunch of cute stands and restaurants to try. One in particular is a bakery full of really good looking cookies, breads and treats. They also serve sandwiches/lunch. It's call Mariposa. They had so many things to chose from, it was really hard to pick just one thing to try. Got the Walnut Brownie. OMG. that is all I can say. I will be back for more delicious treats from this place! I was CRAVING a Reese’s Pieces McFlurry (I don’t know why, but it sounded so good at the time). But clearly I wasn’t the only one craving something from McDonalds, I sat in line for a good 30 minutes! The antisipation was killing me, I was hunger, a McFlurry sounded so good, it was hot out, I was loosing time sitting in that line. When it was finally my turn to put me order it, I was met with such disappointment… “We no longer carry the Reese’s”…. WHAT?!?!, How? When?! I was devastated. That was the last time I’ve been to a McDonalds 3) The rim! WOW is all I can say. It will humble you, and remind you that you are just a speck for a moment of time on this earth 4) The drive going east and the north east from the grand canyon at night, at as a single female was terrifying. I am likely a little too confident being alone in situations but leaving the park immediately concerned me. Being alone with nothing around likely didn’t help but my path, I saw another young woman leave a dog on the side of the road, pulled into a gas station that I new I was being watched by everyone as an outsider, only to then have a car follow me RIGHT on my bumper, but never willing to pass, for over 3 hours in pitch blackness during a heavy down pour rain, and pulled in behind me as well when I entered the camp ground I was planning to stay at in Bluff, UT. After that, I turned back out and kept driving until came across Blanding (who BTW had Tesla chargers in their library parking lot!). My dad is a big Eames fan and was unable to attend, therefore I was sent to give him a overview of the talk. I didn't know what to expect, I value the work the Eames created and how they pushed both methods and mindsets, but personally I am not a huge fan of the actual products. Nothing against them, I am just not a big Mid Centruy Mondern person. This talk was interesting though, it was given by the grandson, Demetrios Eames. So the first person perspective of a family member, who is not only trying to preserve a famous piece of art, The Eames Home, but also hold onto family memories. We were required to use it for our humanities class with a focus on social topics. I wasn't a fan. Not so much of the medium but the topics we were required to about on a public social platform. Once the class was over, I deleted the posts and tried to use it for other design topics but never got into it. I felt you needed a social network to share your tweets with (which I did not have) and I wasn't about to give minute by minute updates about my boring life. Moving to SF though, I hear so much about Twitter. Heck I live RIGHT NEXT DOOR to their headquarters. In an effort to jump on board, I created a new Twitter Account (I couldn't get into my old one because it was linked to my non-existent school email and Twitters repetitive cycle of trying to retrieve account info when you no longer have access to the linked email was worthless). Thanks to great friend, I had the opportunity to ride passenger down Highway 1 on this sunny, no cloud in the sky day. From SF to Monterey, there wasn't a single bad view. The wind in my hair, wrapped in my jacket, I was lucky not to lose my phone out the car as I took photo after photo. I still marvel at how drastically different the landscape of this country can be and how many amazing natural beauties it has to offer. California, you have done a great job at keeping your cost line untouched. I'm just shocked that the road wasn't full of cars. If I could do this trip everyday, I would. Home of Tomales Bay Oyster Company, I was hoping to get fresh oysters pulled right from the bay. Sadly, it isn't exactly the right time of year and little did I know the 1 hour north from SF via interstate, was more like a 3 hour drive via Highway 1. Taking the hairpin after hairpin turn road, I quickly realized, the trip to Tomales Bay was probably not going to happen. The views were totally worth it though. High on the cliffs gave a completely different seen then the day before. After realizing the drive was going to take much longer than expected, we came across the Stinson Beach. A cute small town, full of surfers. This beach side town offered the perfect way station for a cold beer and snack. Pulling up to one restaurant with a large patio and people eating, we were quickly told they were closed for the day but that the place right across the street was just opening. Note, it was 3:00pm and the patio was full of people. So we crossed the street to the Sand Dollar Restaurant, where they were literally just opening door for the day. As their first guest, we chose to sit outside and selected the perfect table right in the sun. Thankfully, only being a short drive from Tomales Bay, this little restaurant severed Tomales Bay oysters! We ordered a beer and half dozen oysters each. I have never had such fresh tasting oysters in my life. The restaurant quickly started to fill up and by the time we left, less than an hour later, they were out of oysters! We got back in the car and drove the way we came. Somehow the drive back always seems to go much faster than the drive there. So if you ever want to visit a hidden gem just outside the city, I highly recommend taking the drive to Stinson Beach. I went to school in Downtown Milwaukee in a 3 building campus: the dorms, the union and the school. While I have been to nice campuses like Indiana University, Purdue University and Wisconsin, I must say the Berkeley campus is beautiful. Seemed a little smaller than I expected, but man... The modern buildings mixed with traditional academic structures and the landscape... The trees... I can see why people may have lived in those trees to save them. (I do laugh about that). If you ever have the chance, go out to Berkely and walk around. There was a cute outdoor coffee shop on the south side of campus and I had the best pizza of my life at Jupiter. A local bar, that to my surpise had a very cute outdoor courtyard seating and really good food! A month and a day ago she was fine, then all of a sudden she was sick. She passed after a four-week battle with gallbladder and peritoneal cancer. I’m fortunate to be in Indy and able to make the memorial service. As my gma says, funerals are for the living. A time to see everyone. There were a lot of people in attendance. While Nedra will be greatly missed, her passing brought a lot of us together that haven’t seen each other in a long time.
